Typically when we install an exterior insulation system, we start by attaching insulation boards to the outer wall with mechanical fixings. In some cases, when needed, we also add an adhesive.

We then apply a flexible, breathable base coat, with reinforcing mesh trowelled throughout its surface to prevent cracking, and fit rust-proof plastic beading. Finally, we use a spray rendering machine to apply the outer layer, which we then smooth down and add the chosen colour and decorative finish to.

Designing and installing an exterior thermal insulation system is a specialist job. Although it uses standard construction methods, the systems vary in the thickness and type of insulation they use, and the many different types of render finishes available.

THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND

You might need to get planning permission. Installing external wall insulation can alter the appearance of your property, so you should check first with your local council whether you need permission.

This is especially important if your property is in a conservation area.

Putting in exterior thermal insulation requires easy access to the outer walls. If there’s only limited access to the walls, you might need to ask a professional whether it’s possible for the property to be insulated from the outside.

Installing external wall insulation is not recommended if your outer walls are in a bad state and can’t be repaired.

For detached houses and other properties with several external walls, it’s possible to save as much as £455 per year, or more for larger residential blocks or commercial developments.

As for the effect on the environment, insulating an average-sized house in London with external wall insulation can save up to 1.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. For larger commercial or residential developments, the figure is even higher.
